UK Athletics has been charged with manslaughter following the death of Paralympian Abdullah Hayayei.
Hayayei, aged 36, tragically passed away after a metal cage fell on him while he was training at Newham Leisure Centre in London in July 2017.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has charged UK Athletics Limited with “corporate manslaughter and a health and safety at work act offence.”
Keith Davies, the head of sport for the 2017 World Para-athletics Championships, has also been charged with “gross negligence manslaughter and a health and safety at work act offence.”
Both UK Athletics and Davies, 77, are scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 31 January.
At the time of the incident, Hayayei was preparing for the World Championships in London.
The United Arab Emirates athlete was set to compete in the F34 shot put, discus, and javelin events.
A father of five, Hayayei made his Paralympic debut at the Rio 2016 Games, finishing sixth in the javelin and seventh in the shot put.
The 2017 London Championships were intended to be his second World Championships appearance, following a fifth-place finish in the discus and eighth in the shot put at the 2015 event in Doha, Qatar.
A moment of silence was held in Hayayei’s honor during the opening ceremony of the World Championships at London Stadium.
