Aaron Ramsey, Wales captain and former Arsenal FC midfielder, has announced his immediate retirement from professional football at the age of 35.

According to BBC Sport, Ramsey, who has been without a club since leaving Pumas UNAM last year, is set to move into coaching.

He bows out as one of Wales’ most accomplished players, scoring 21 goals in 86 appearances and featuring in major tournaments including Euro 2016, Euro 2020, and the 2022 World Cup—Wales’ first appearance at the tournament in 64 years.

Ramsey played a crucial role in Wales’ run to the semi-finals at Euro 2016 and was named in UEFA’s team of the tournament.

He started his professional journey with Cardiff City before joining Arsenal in 2008. During his 11-year spell with the club, he won three FA Cups and scored decisive goals in two finals.

He later featured for Juventus and OGC Nice, and also had a loan stint with Rangers FC, where he helped the team reach the 2022 Europa League final. He eventually returned briefly to Cardiff, where he also served as interim head coach.

In an emotional message shared on social media, Ramsey expressed gratitude to those who supported him throughout his career: “This has not been an easy decision to make… It has been my privilege to wear the Welsh shirt and experience so many incredible moments. To the Red Wall, you have been an essential part of our success. Diolch.

“Thank you to all the clubs I’ve been lucky enough to play for, and a huge thank you to my wife, children, and all my family. Without you, none of this would have been possible.”

He retires with a lasting legacy, celebrated for his talent, leadership, and impact on Welsh football.
