West Brom fight back to defeat Huddersfield

Mikey Johnston found the net twice, while Okay Yokuslu unleashed a stunning long-range strike, contributing to West Bromwich Albion’s remarkable comeback win against relegation-threatened Huddersfield Town.

Huddersfield Town had the opportunity to climb out of the Championship’s relegation zone with a victory, initially taking the lead through Delano Burgzorg’s 30th-minute goal, as his angled left-footed shot slipped underneath visiting goalkeeper Alex Palmer.

However, West Bromwich Albion, positioned fifth in the league, were far from their best in the first half, failing to register a single shot on goal. Yet, they emerged transformed after halftime.

Albion equalized when Andreas Weimann delivered a low cross for on-loan Celtic winger Mikey Johnston to tap in from close range, followed by Kyle Bartley poking the ball home after a scramble in the six-yard box to put Albion ahead.

Turkey midfielder Okay Yokuslu added to the tally with a powerful strike from 25 yards out, making it 3-1, before Johnston slipped the ball underneath Lee Nicholls to secure his sixth goal in his last seven appearances.

This marked the first time Albion scored four goals in a single half since their 5-2 victory against Hull City in August 2022.

The second-half comeback brought joy to Albion head coach Carlos Corberan, who returned to Huddersfield for the first time since leaving his role as Terriers boss in July 2022, six weeks after their defeat to Nottingham Forest in the Championship play-off final.

With nine games remaining, Albion’s chances of surpassing the teams above them in the Championship seem slim, with fourth-placed Southampton holding a 10-point advantage and a game in hand over the Baggies.

However, they are five points clear of seventh-placed Hull and in a good position to clinch a play-off spot.

At the other end of the Championship, it could hardly be closer after the latest round of fixtures in the second tier.

Third-from-bottom Huddersfield remain a point from safety, although the Terriers and 12th-placed Sunderland are separated by only nine points.
