Wilfred Ndidi has been officially appointed as the new captain of the Super Eagles of Nigeria on the eve of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The defensive midfielder assumes leadership of the national team following the retirement of William Troost-Ekong and Ahmed Musa, the former captains of the senior men’s side.

The 29-year-old Besiktas midfielder and former vice-captain was handed the captain’s armband on Friday after the team arrived in Morocco for the tournament and conducted its first training session.

Speaking to the team’s media unit, Ndidi said he had already consulted senior members of the squad about his new responsibility and appealed for the cooperation of players and officials to ensure a smooth transition.

“It’s a huge responsibility,” he said, noting that “with the help of the players, I think everything will go smoothly.

“I’ve had conversations with a couple of players, just some of the older players, to try to make them understand the reason why we’re here. We also need support from the staff. We’re all in this together.”

The Super Eagles failed to secure qualification for the 2026 World Cup after losing in the continental playoffs, but Ndidi believes the AFCON presents a fresh chance for redemption.

He added that the Eric Chelle-led squad is determined to make a strong impression at the 35th edition of the tournament.

“It was a sad one missing out on the World Cup, but this is another opportunity. Another day, another opportunity to correct the wrongs, put smiles on faces of Nigerians, and make the country proud once again,” he said.

“It’s not going to be an easy task, but we’re really up for it. We look forward to enjoying it together.”

Ndidi will lead the Super Eagles in his first match as captain when Nigeria face Tanzania in their opening group game on December 23.
