South Africa’s World Cup journey came to a heartbreaking end after Stephen Eustaquio scored a dramatic 92nd-minute winner to hand Canada a hard-fought 1-0 victory and seal their place in the round of 16.

The round of 32 clash at the Los Angeles Stadium looked destined for extra time before Eustaquio struck deep into stoppage time to separate the two sides.

Both teams were making historic appearances in the men’s World Cup knockout stage. Canada posed the greater attacking threat in the opening half but struggled to break down South Africa’s disciplined defence.

Derek Cornelius squandered an early golden chance, heading straight at Ronwen Williams from close range. Moments before half-time, Moise Bombito believed he had given Canada the lead with a powerful header, but Aubrey Modiba produced a brilliant goal-line clearance to keep South Africa level.

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos set his side up to withstand sustained pressure, with Oswin Appollis offering occasional attacking threat on the counter. Canadian goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau also remained alert whenever called into action.

The introduction of Alphonso Davies in the 75th minute changed the rhythm of the game, as the winger injected pace and urgency into Canada’s attack despite recently recovering from a hamstring injury.

As the match entered five minutes of added time, Canada finally found the breakthrough. After a partially cleared cross, the ball dropped kindly to Eustaquio on the edge of the area. The midfielder controlled superbly before drilling a low shot into the bottom-left corner, leaving Williams helpless.

Canada now advances to the round of 16, where they will face the winner of the Netherlands versus Morocco clash in Houston on July 4.
