Imagine you buy a new phone, transfer your important files and forget about the old one sitting inside your drawer.

Months later, someone picks up that old phone and starts going through it.
They could find your old pictures, WhatsApp chats, phone numbers, screenshots, documents and other information you thought you had left behind.
For many Nigerians, an old phone is simply a device they no longer use. Some keep it at home, while others sell it, give it to a relative or throw it away when it stops working.
But that phone may still hold pieces of its owner’s life.
It could show places they visited, people they communicated with, pictures they took and information they saved.
In other words, your old phone may remember more about you than you do.
Your phone stores more than you think
For many Nigerians, a smartphone is now used for almost everything.
People use their phones to chat with friends, take pictures, receive bank alerts, work, study, shop online and use social media.
Some also keep important documents on their phones.
This means an old phone may contain information that its owner has completely forgotten about.
A person may have hundreds of old pictures in the gallery.
There may also be screenshots of conversations, receipts, addresses, tickets and other information.
Some of these files may have been forgotten for years.
Deleting a file does not always mean it is gone
One common mistake people make is assuming that once they delete a picture or document, it disappears completely.
That may not always be the case.
Some phones have a recently deleted folder where files remain for some time.
Photos and other files may also have been backed up to an online account.
So, deleting something from the phone does not necessarily mean there is no other copy.
This is why people need to be careful when giving their old phones to someone else.
The danger of selling an old phone
Many Nigerians sell their old phones when they want to buy newer models.
Others exchange them for another phone or give them to relatives.
Before doing this, it is important to properly clear personal information from the device.
Simply deleting a few pictures and removing the SIM card may not be enough.
There could still be old conversations, contacts, documents or accounts on the phone.
A new owner could come across information the previous owner never intended to share.
Your accounts may still be connected
Another thing people sometimes forget is their online accounts.
Someone may use the same phone to access Gmail, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp or other services.
If those accounts are still connected to the device, the next person who gets the phone could potentially access private information.
That is why people should sign out of their accounts before selling or giving away an old phone.
They should also check their account settings to make sure the old device no longer has access.
Don’t forget your screenshots
Screenshots are another problem.
People take screenshots of almost everything.
It could be a bank transfer, phone number, address, conversation, online order or ticket.
After using the information, many people forget about the screenshot.
Months later, it may still be sitting inside the phone.
Someone going through an old phone could therefore find information the owner had completely forgotten.
What if the phone is damaged?
A broken phone does not necessarily mean the information inside it is gone.
A phone with a broken screen, faulty charging port or damaged body may still contain its owner’s files.
This is important when disposing of an old device.
Throwing a broken phone away without properly clearing it can leave personal information on the device.
What you should do before giving away your phone
Before selling or giving your old phone to another person, take some time to protect your information.
Back up the photos, contacts and documents you want to keep.
Sign out of your important accounts.
Remove your SIM card and memory card.
Check the phone for personal photos, videos, documents and screenshots.
Most importantly, use the phone’s factory reset option to erase your personal information before handing it over.
If you are not sure how to do this, ask a trusted technician or check the phone manufacturer’s instructions.
Your old phone may know more about you than you remember
A smartphone is no longer just a device for making calls.
For many people, it has become a place where they keep pictures, conversations, documents, memories and other parts of their daily lives.
That is why an old phone can reveal a surprising amount about its former owner.
Before selling, giving away or throwing away your old phone, don’t just remove the SIM card.
Make sure you remove your personal information too.
