The Ebonyi State Government has raised the minimum wage for civil and public servants to ₦90,000, up from ₦70,000. The new wage takes immediate effect.
The decision followed the State Executive Council meeting on Wednesday, 27 August 2025, at the New Government House, Abakaliki. Commissioner for Information, Ikeuwa Collins-Omebeh, confirmed the development in a statement released on Thursday.
He explained that the increase aligned with Governor Francis Nwifuru’s People’s Charter of Needs Agenda, which prioritises workers’ welfare.
“The governor remains committed to improving the living conditions of Ebonyi workers, and this wage rise reflects that dedication,” the statement read.
The Council also approved the creation of the Ebonyi State Virology Research and Innovative Centre. According to Omebeh, the centre will enhance the state’s ability to conduct research, strengthen disease surveillance, improve diagnostics, and train health professionals in line with global scientific standards.
The announcement came a day after the Imo State Government approved a new minimum wage of ₦104,000, following a meeting between Governor Hope Uzodimma and labour leaders in Owerri.
In July 2024, President Bola Tinubu signed the new minimum wage bill into law, raising the national minimum wage from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000. Since then, several state governments have increased wages further to cushion the effect of economic pressures.
