The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun State Command, has confirmed that four persons lost their lives in a fatal lone accident that occurred along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Sunday night.
In a statement released on Monday, the State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Akinwunmi Fasakin, said the incident involved a commercial Toyota Hiace bus and happened at about 9:18 p.m. in front of Christopher University.
He noted that “the FRSC Mowe Unit Command responded promptly to the distress call and arrived at the crash scene within two minutes.”
Fasakin disclosed that 13 persons were involved in the accident, comprising 11 adult males and two adult females.
“Out of the 13 persons involved, eight sustained varying degrees of injuries, while four adult males unfortunately lost their lives in the crash,” he stated.
Preliminary findings indicated that the crash resulted from a tyre burst, worsened by excessive speed, which caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle.
“The suspected causes of the crash were tyre burst and speed violation. These factors remain major contributors to road traffic crashes and must be avoided by all motorists,” he added.
The injured victims were taken to Famobis Hospital for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at the Idera Morgue.
Fasakin further revealed that the Motor Traffic Division of the Redeemed Police Station has taken custody of the vehicle and recovered items for further investigation.
He extended condolences to the families of the victims and urged motorists to prioritise safety.
“We sympathise with the families of the victims who lost their lives in this unfortunate incident. We also urge all road users to obey speed limits and ensure that their tyres are in good condition before embarking on any journey,” he said.
The FRSC reaffirmed its commitment to road safety and called on the public to comply with traffic regulations to prevent avoidable accidents.
