A student of the Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OASUTECH), Akinteye Babatunde, has been elected as the new national president of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).

Akinteye reportedly defeated four other aspirants during an election held at the 2026 national convention of the association held in Abuja on Sunday.

The other aspirants are Aminu Maipampo of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Awoyinpa Elijah of the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), Olumide Josiah of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), and Opaleye Oladutun of the Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta.

The new president will succeed Olushola Oladoja, a postgraduate student of the University of Jos (UNIJOS), who was elected during NANS 2025 convention held in February in Abuja.

The NANS constitution mandates every elected national president of the body to spend one year in office, which typically aligns with academic sessions of most schools.

Omotayo Samuel, chairman of the independent convention planning committee, said 300 delegates including student union government presidents, senate presidents, and other student leaders from tertiary institutions across the country participated in the convention.

The new president, in his address after the election, thanked the delegates, vowing to sustain the achievements of the outgoing administration and promoting unity among Nigerian students.
