FIFA World Cup: Country ever presence since 1930

15

Ever since the inaugural FIFA World Cup in 1930, dozens of countries have graced football’s biggest stage. Yet only one nation can boast an unbroken record of participation in every edition of the tournament: Brazil.

The South American giants remain the only country never to have missed a World Cup, qualifying for every tournament despite the demanding nature of South American qualifiers.

Brazil is also the most successful nation in World Cup history, having lifted the trophy five times—in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002. Football icons such as Pelé, Romário, Ronaldo Nazário, Ronaldinho, Kaká and Neymar have all represented the Selecão on the global stage.

Nations That Came Close

Several football powerhouses nearly maintained perfect attendance records but fell short for various reasons.

  • Germany missed the 1930 World Cup and was barred from the 1950 tournament following World War II. Despite that, Germany has won four World Cup titles.
  • Italy did not participate in the inaugural 1930 edition and later suffered the shock of failing to qualify for the 2018, 2022 and 2026 tournaments, despite being four-time world champions.
  • Argentina skipped the 1938, 1950 and 1954 World Cups due to political and administrative circumstances before becoming one of the sport’s dominant forces, winning titles in 1978, 1986 and 2022.
  • Spain missed several early tournaments before becoming a regular participant and eventually winning its first World Cup in 2010.

Brazil’s record remains one of the most remarkable achievements in international football, reflecting nearly a century of sustained excellence and consistency on the world stage.
