Operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps, also known as Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI), have rescued a woman and her five-month-old baby from a canal in the Abule-Ado area along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.
The mother and her infant were reportedly found on Wednesday during a routine environmental clearance exercise carried out by KAI officials in the area.
The agency’s spokesperson, Lukman Ajayi, confirmed the incident during a telephone interview, explaining that the operatives raised the alarm after discovering the woman and her baby inside the canal.
Ajayi said the woman was unable to provide a satisfactory explanation for their presence at the location, while the baby was found in an unhealthy condition.
He said the operatives immediately intervened to safeguard the lives of both mother and child and transported them to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
“Today, our operatives rescued a mother and her five-month-old baby girl from a canal at Abule-Ado during routine clearance operations on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway,” Ajayi said.
According to him, the woman told the operatives that she had left her husband, who resides in FESTAC, but could not adequately explain how she and the child ended up in the canal.
“The mother could not give a satisfactory answer as to why they were there, and she only said she was running from her husband, who lived in FESTAC,” he added.
Ajayi said the child’s condition at the time of the rescue was particularly concerning, prompting the operatives to seek immediate medical attention.
“Both the mother and the child have been taken to the hospital. The child was not in a good state of health when they were rescued,” he said.
