Residents of Ohatekwe Ukawu in Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State have banished a 20-year-old man, Damian Oforbuike, for allegedly killing his mother.
The suspect was said to have attacked his mother, Onyemaechi, with a machete in an incident that has left the community in shock and mourning.
According to sources, the attack occurred over the weekend, after which Oforbuike fled into a nearby forest. However, local youths reportedly mobilised, tracked him down, and apprehended him.
He was later paraded around the community before being banished with a warning never to return.
In a viral video recorded during the parade, the suspect allegedly confessed to the act, citing his mother’s refusal to bathe him and provide funds to set up a barbing business for his brother as reasons.
“I killed my mother because she refused to bathe me and also refused to rent a shop for my brother who learned barbing and needed money to start,” he said.
The councillor representing the area, Maduabuchi Nweke, who confirmed the incident, said over 200 youths were mobilised to search the forest, leading to the suspect’s arrest.
He added that the suspect has since been handed over to the police for further investigation, while the remains of the deceased have been deposited in a morgue.
