A 43-year-old man, Abbas Olalekan, appeared on Monday before an Abeokuta Chief Magistrates’ Court over allegations of conspiracy and attempting to procure an abortion.
Olalekan, a resident of the Mosafueto area in Oke-Ata, Abeokuta, faces charges of conspiracy and unlawfully attempting to procure an abortion by supplying drugs.
The prosecution, led by Insp. Lawrence Olu-Balogun, told the court that the alleged offences occurred between January and March in the Ikereku area of Laderin, Abeokuta.
It was claimed that Olalekan conspired with unidentified individuals to commit the felony and attempted to procure an abortion by providing drugs to the woman, who has since died.
According to the prosecution, Olalekan, a staff member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), had a relationship with the deceased, also a corps member serving in Abeokuta. He allegedly impregnated her and supplied abortion drugs, which reportedly resulted in her death.
The offences are said to contravene Sections 516 and 230 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State, 2006. Olalekan, however, pleaded not guilty.
His counsel, Mrs. Bunmi Adelabu, requested bail in the most liberal terms, citing Section 36(5) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), arguing that the charge did not directly hold Olalekan responsible for the woman’s death.
Magistrate Mrs. A.K. Araba granted bail of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum. She stipulated that one surety must be a relative and the other gainfully employed, and both must provide a utility bill, an affidavit of means, six passport photographs, and proof of 2026 tax payment to the Ogun Government.
Olalekan was remanded at the Ibara Correctional Centre pending fulfillment of the bail conditions. The case was adjourned to April 14 for further hearing.
