Nigerian comedian and actor Okey Bakassi has stated that polygamy is the best type of marriage for African cultures.
Bakassi asserted that “monogamy is not working” when he appeared on the “Honest Bunch” podcast.
He maintained that a large number of people in monogamous relationships are only acting content.
“Forget all the lip services that we pay to polygamy here. I still think that polygamy is the best form of marriage for Africa. Monogamy is not working,” he said.
“We are pretending. Now, what is the difference between polygamy and monogamy? Polygamy says you can marry two people at the same time. Monogamy says you cannot marry them at the same time, you have to let one go. What if you don’t want to let one go?”
The comedian however did not provide statistical evidence to back his claims.
In a similar story, Stephen Alajemba, well known by his stage name Uwaezuoke, shared his thoughts on marriage.
He claimed that having fewer than three wives is a sin and puts a man’s life in danger in a recent interview with Ugwumba TV.
Having just one or two wives can result in conspiracy and even poisoning, according to Uwaezuoke. He thinks that having three or more women would stop this, though, because each wife would be too busy with her own life.
He stated:
“It’s a sin to marry one or two wives. But if you marry three or four, you will be free from sin. If you marry one wife your life is at risk. The safety of the director is in the hands of the security. If you marry two wives, they will conspire to poison you.
“But if you marry three or more wives, they will all be on their own and you will only be providing for them. You will be taking turns with their meals and bedrooms.”
