Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has exercised his constitutional prerogative of mercy by granting a full pardon to seven inmates serving different sentences in correctional centres across the state.
A statement by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Prince Ebenezer Adeniyan, said the decision was taken to commemorate the governor’s 61st birthday and to complement the clemency earlier approved on January 1, 2026, as part of the New Year celebrations.
The statement noted that the governor, acting on the advice of the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, had approved clemency for 77 convicts in total.
It added that the seven inmates granted outright pardon were carefully chosen based on verified assessments of genuine remorse, good conduct, commitment to rehabilitation, and clear prospects for successful reintegration into society.
According to the statement, their release underscores the governor’s belief in restorative justice, the need to decongest correctional facilities, and the importance of offering second chances to individuals who have shown real transformation.
The Chairman of the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy and Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, Dr. Kayode Ajulo, SAN, praised the governor’s action, describing it as thoughtful and progressive.
Ajulo said the move reinforces the administration’s resolve to strike a balance between accountability and compassion, reform the justice system, and foster a society where redemption is achievable.
