The Bauchi State Police Command has reaffirmed its resolve to tackle violent crime and terrorism in the state with the launch of the Violent Crime Response Unit.
Speaking on Tuesday at the official inauguration of the unit in Bauchi, the state Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, said the initiative reflects the command’s dedication to improving security.
Addressing the theme, “Enhancing Accountability, Strengthening Public Trust and Promoting Professionalism in Policing,” the commissioner explained that the unit was created to respond to emerging security challenges such as kidnapping, armed robbery, banditry and other related offences.
He stated that the initiative is designed to establish a functional operational unit that strictly adheres to the law, respects human rights, depends on credible intelligence and works closely with communities.
Aliyu emphasised that the unit is not a rebranding of any previous tactical formation, but an entirely new operational structure founded on professionalism, discipline, accountability and public trust.
He revealed that officers selected for the unit underwent a strict and transparent screening process.
“You were interviewed and assessed based on operational competence, integrity, discipline, physical fitness and understanding of human rights principles.
“I am pleased to announce that 54 officers successfully passed the screening process and have been selected for the initial deployment into the BCRU,” he said.
According to him, the officers received extensive training covering human rights, professional conduct, rules of engagement, intelligence-led policing, tactical operations, lawful arrest procedures, detention processes and use of force.
“The training was designed to ensure that every officer clearly understands that professionalism and respect for human dignity are fundamental requirements of modern policing,” he added.
The commissioner also named CSP Abdulrazak Musa as commander of the unit in the state, describing him as a seasoned operational officer with notable experience in combating kidnapping, robbery and banditry both within and outside Bauchi State.
He added that a key feature of the initiative is the creation of a civilian oversight board for the unit.

Aliyu said the board includes representatives from the judiciary, civil society organisations, traditional institutions, religious groups, community leaders, women and youth groups, among other stakeholders.
“The essence of the board is to strengthen transparency, build public confidence and create a constructive bridge between the police and the communities we serve,” he stated.
He explained that the board would oversee the unit’s conduct and its impact on communities, receive public feedback and support accountability measures while respecting the operational independence of the Nigeria Police Force.
The commissioner stressed that security is a shared responsibility and appealed to community leaders, religious leaders, youth groups and residents to support the unit with timely and credible information to help prevent crime.
Aliyu also praised the Inspector-General of Police for driving reforms aimed at building a police force Nigerians can trust and respect, while commending the Bauchi State Government for its continued backing of security agencies.
He urged members of the newly inaugurated unit to remain disciplined, accountable and respectful of citizens’ rights.
“The public will judge this unit not only by arrests made or operations conducted but by discipline, professionalism, respect for the law and relationship with the public,” he warned.
In his remarks, the Emir of Bauchi, Alhaji Rilwanu Suleimanu Adamu, represented by the Wazirin Bauchi, Muhammad Kari, applauded the police command for its commitment and sacrifices in protecting lives and property.
The royal father described the inauguration of the initiative as a forward-looking move toward strengthening the security framework of the state and the nation.
He also recognised Governor Bala Mohammed’s support for security initiatives across the state and commended the commissioner of police for his leadership and dedication to sustaining peace and stability.
The emir assured the police command of the continued support, goodwill and prayers of the traditional institution for the success of the initiative and lasting peace in Bauchi State.
