Winning the UEFA Champions League remains the biggest ambition in club football, yet several legendary clubs with enormous history, loyal fanbases, and strong financial backing have never managed to win the competition
Some have come heartbreakingly close, while others continue to be major European forces still searching for their first title.
This ranking is based on:
Size of fanbase and worldwide support
How close the club has come to winning the Champions League
Financial power and ability to sign top-level players.
10. Dynamo Kyiv
Dynamo Kyiv are among Eastern Europe’s most historic clubs and have been regular competitors in European football since the early 1990s.
Although they have never won the Champions League, they came close during the European Cup era by reaching the semi-finals on three occasions (1977, 1987, and 1999).
Legendary figures such as Andriy Shevchenko and Serhiy Rebrov played major roles in shaping the club’s European reputation, with Rebrov scoring 31 goals in European competitions for the club.
Even with their consistency, they have never advanced to a Champions League final.
9. Galatasaray
One of Turkey’s most successful clubs, Galatasaray are famous for their intense home atmosphere and highly passionate supporters.
They have enjoyed memorable European success, including winning the UEFA Cup and UEFA Super Cup in 2000.
However, in the Champions League, their best performances ended in the quarter-finals in 2001 and 2013, often falling to elite sides such as Real Madrid.
8. Schalke 04
Schalke possess one of the biggest fanbases in European football, yet Champions League triumph has always escaped them.
Their strongest campaign came in 2011 when they reached the semi-finals under Ralf Rangnick before being knocked out by Manchester United.
Despite their domestic history and massive support, European success has remained unattainable.
7. Valencia
Valencia came extremely close to winning the Champions League in consecutive seasons, losing the finals in both 2000 and 2001.
They were first defeated by Real Madrid before suffering a penalty shootout loss to Bayern Munich after taking an early lead in the 2001 final.
They remain one of Spain’s biggest clubs, but those missed chances still define their European legacy.
6. Bayer Leverkusen
Leverkusen’s most painful moment came in 2002 when they reached the Champions League final but lost to Real Madrid.
Zinedine Zidane’s unforgettable volley decided the match in one of the competition’s most iconic finals.
That same season, they also narrowly missed out on a treble after finishing runners-up in both the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal.
5. Olympique Lyonnais
Lyon have regularly competed strongly in Europe but have never appeared in a Champions League final.
They reached the semi-finals twice, in 2010 and 2020, losing on both occasions to Bayern Munich.
Despite developing world-class players like Karim Benzema, they remain one of France’s biggest clubs without a Champions League title.
4. Roma
Roma have experienced both heartbreak and unforgettable moments in the Champions League.
They reached the 1984 European Cup final but lost to Liverpool on penalties in their own stadium.
In 2018, they produced a remarkable comeback against Barcelona in the quarter-finals before eventually being eliminated by Liverpool in the semi-finals.
3. Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham’s nearest opportunity came in 2019 when they reached their first Champions League final.
Following dramatic victories over Manchester City and Ajax, they lost 2–0 to Liverpool in Madrid.
It remains their only appearance in the final.
2. Arsenal
Arsenal came closest to winning the Champions League in 2006 when they lost the final to Barcelona after taking the lead through Sol Campbell.
They also reached the semi-finals in 2009, where Manchester United knocked them out.
Despite being one of England’s biggest clubs, the Champions League is still the missing trophy in their cabinet.
1. Atlético Madrid
Atlético Madrid sit at the top of the list as the biggest club never to win the Champions League.
They have reached the final three times — in 1974, 2014, and 2016 — but lost on every occasion.
The 2014 and 2016 defeats to Real Madrid were particularly devastating, with both finals decided after extra time or penalties.
Even so, Atlético remain one of Europe’s elite clubs and continue pursuing their first Champions League triumph.
