A 46-year-old man, Imeh Sunday, has been found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment for incestuous rape.

The ruling was delivered on Wednesday by Family Court 2 in Calabar, with Justice Blessing Egwu presiding.

Justice Egwu imposed the maximum sentence, citing what the court described as overwhelming evidence presented by the prosecution.

The case was pursued with support from the Basic Rights Counsel Initiative (BRCI), an organisation dedicated to protecting the rights of children and vulnerable women.

Following the judgment, Principal Counsel of BRCI, James Ibor, said the conviction reflects ongoing efforts to secure justice for survivors of sexual violence in the state.

He revealed that the organisation has recorded several convictions in rape-related cases across Cross River State in recent months.

Ibor also praised the survivor, her family, law enforcement officials, and judicial officers for their roles in ensuring justice was achieved.

He further commended the cooperation of the state Attorney-General, Ededem Charles Ani, the Commissioner of Police, Rashid Afegbua, as well as BRCI staff and volunteers for their support throughout the case and the survivor’s recovery process.
