The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has reported an explosion on its Escravos-Lagos pipeline.

In a statement on Friday, Andy Odeh, NNPC spokesperson, said the explosion occurred on December 10 near the Tebijor, Okpele, and Ikpopo communities in the Gbaramatu Kingdom of Delta state.

Odeh noted that initial observations pointed to a pressure drop, consistent with a loss of containment on an NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company (NGIC) pipeline.

“The cause of the explosion is still unknown but would be confirmed after a detailed investigation has been concluded,” the NNPC said.

“Our priority at this time is the safety of nearby communities and the protection of the environment.

“Emergency response procedures have been activated, and we are working closely with relevant authorities and community leaders to ensure a coordinated approach to mitigate impact.”

The NNPC stressed its dedication to the highest safety and environmental standards.

This new explosion is one of several incidents that have recently affected communities and the environment in the Niger Delta region. In October, an oil spill occurred on a pipeline operated by Nembe Exploration and Production Company Limited (formerly Aiteo Eastern Exploration and Production Company Limited).

In May, another leak was reported in the Ikata community of the Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers state.
