The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has announced that search and recovery efforts are still ongoing following Thursday’s crash involving a Sikorsky SK76 helicopter in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The Bureau stated that additional diving equipment and resources will be deployed to support the continuation of these efforts.
The crash occurred around 11:22 am near Bonny Finima, off the coast of Port Harcourt.
Eight individuals – six passengers and two crew members – were on board the aircraft at the time of the incident.
So far, five bodies have been recovered, with three individuals still unaccounted for.
In an update issued late on Friday, the NSIB reported that search operations were suspended at approximately 6:15 pm due to fading daylight. Unfortunately, no debris, survivors, or bodies were recovered during the day’s search.
The statement, signed by NSIB spokesperson Mrs Bimbo Oladeji, noted that the divers successfully established a secure diving perimeter at an expected wreck location, which will guide the operations scheduled for Saturday.
The perimeter depth, according to the statement, has been measured at 40-50 metres.
Captain Alex Badeh Jr., Director General of the NSIB, stated, “We acknowledge the tireless efforts of the amalgamated rescue teams and supporting partners. We will continue these operations with all necessary resources and appreciate the cooperation and patience of all stakeholders involved.”
The NSIB affirmed its commitment to providing timely updates as the investigation progresses and to conducting a thorough and transparent analysis of the incident.
It added that further details will be shared as they become available.
