Tinubu has mourned the death of retired Major-General Rabe Abubakar, who reportedly died after being kidnapped by terrorists in Katsina State.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the President described the incident as heartbreaking and said it underscored the persistent security threats facing the country. He noted that the former army officer was travelling to his hometown when he was seized by gunmen.
The presidency also disclosed that the late general’s wife was abducted alongside him and remains in captivity.
Offering condolences to the family, Katsina residents, and the military community, Tinubu said the loss was deeply painful and unacceptable.
While reaffirming his administration’s commitment to tackling insecurity, the President maintained that terrorists, kidnappers and their backers would face decisive action from the government.
“Bandits, kidnappers, and sponsors of terror should now surrender or face the full force of the Nigerian State. These windows of surrender will not remain open forever. And no mercy will be shown to those who trade in the blood of Nigerians.”
He urged citizens to remain united and optimistic, expressing confidence that Nigeria would eventually overcome terrorism and other security challenges.
“As Nigerians, we must stand united and be assured that the enemies of our nation shall soon be history. We will triumph over terror and continue to build a more prosperous nation.”
Tinubu further stated that General Abubakar’s death should strengthen the nation’s resolve against terrorism, insisting that criminal groups should be treated as enemies of the state rather than partners for dialogue.
“General Abubakar’s death should further serve as a defining moment in our battle against terrorists and insurgents, never to negotiate with them on any terms, but to continue to treat them as the greatest enemies of our dear nation, who should never be spared.”
