Alexander-Arnold’s equalizer saves Liverpool from defeat against Man City

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s late equalizer earned Liverpool a point in the clash against Manchester City, the top two teams in the Premier League, held at Etihad Stadium.

In a match that didn’t reach the intensity of past encounters between the recent dominant forces in domestic football, reigning champions City took the lead when Erling Haaland capitalized on a poor clearance by Liverpool keeper Alisson.

Haaland’s goal, his 50th in the Premier League and achieved in just his 48th match, provided City with an advantage they maintained until the final stages.

Ruben Dias appeared to score City’s second goal, but it was disallowed for a foul on Alisson. Alexander-Arnold then punished Pep Guardiola’s team for failing to secure the win.

Despite facing defensive challenges against the lively Jeremy Doku, Alexander-Arnold showcased his quality with a decisive, low strike from the edge of the area, leaving Ederson with no chance.

While City remains at the top of the table, they may view this as a missed opportunity, while Liverpool will be content with securing a draw.

City and Guardiola will be aware that they missed an opportunity to make a significant impact against the team widely anticipated to be their primary contenders for the title this season.

City had the superior scoring opportunities and believed they had a strong argument for a second goal when Manuel Akanji was deemed to have fouled Alisson during a second-half corner, just before Dias scored.

Although Haaland had additional chances, notably a header that narrowly missed the far post in the closing moments, City was unable to capitalize fully.

Doku posed a consistent threat for City on the left flank, causing difficulties for Alexander-Arnold, while Nathan Ake excelled in keeping Mohamed Salah in check.

Guardiola was animated in his technical area, at one point being reminded by the fourth official to return after straying down the touchline. In the second half, he turned to the home fans, urging them for increased volume as City pressed for a second goal that could have secured the three points.

After the final whistle, Guardiola appeared to engage in a heated verbal exchange with Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez, possibly revealing his frustration in a game he may view as one that slipped through his grasp.

Liverpool satisfied with a point

Alexander-Arnold responded to City’s fans by silencing them with his decisive equalizer past Ederson.

Facing the challenges posed by Doku’s direct running and trickery, it wasn’t the easiest afternoon for Alexander-Arnold. However, his undeniable skill on the ball came to the forefront, securing a crucial point for Liverpool.

As the game entered its final stages and extended into eight minutes of stoppage time, Liverpool, under Jurgen Klopp’s management, seemed content with sharing the spoils.

Despite not performing at their peak, Liverpool, with their formidable attacking lineup and the added contribution of Alexander-Arnold, remained a persistent threat. The team once again demonstrated their ability to secure points, leaving with a valuable draw.
