Champions League: Gunners hold nerve against Sporting to reach semis

Arsenal advanced to the Champions League semi-finals, where they will face Atletico Madrid, after a goalless draw against Sporting at the Emirates ensured they progressed on aggregate.

The Gunners entered the match looking to respond to their recent defeat to Bournemouth, with Mikel Arteta insisting his side had “fire” and “no fear.” However, a tense atmosphere saw Arsenal struggle to assert themselves, managing just one shot on target and doing little to inspire confidence ahead of Sunday’s crucial Premier League showdown with Manchester City.

Despite the lackluster display, Arteta will take satisfaction from the result, as it secures Arsenal back-to-back Champions League semi-final appearances for the first time in the club’s history.

Short on confidence after losing three of their previous four matches, Arsenal started cautiously, and the game remained tight throughout. Sporting appeared the more threatening side, coming closest just before half-time when Geny Catamo hit the post.

After the interval, the visitors continued to press but failed to seriously test David Raya, who showed signs of nervousness and occasionally handed Sporting opportunities they could not capitalize on.

While progression eases immediate pressure, Arteta now faces concerns over Noni Madueke, who left the pitch clutching his knee following a challenge from Pedro Goncalves. Max Dowman, who came on in his place, could step in if Madueke is unavailable, adding to Arsenal’s growing list of injury worries.
