Chelsea held by Leeds after Palmer’s open-goal miss

Chelsea surrendered a two-goal advantage as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Leeds United at Stamford Bridge on a night dominated by VAR controversy, with Cole Palmer missing a remarkable point-blank opportunity in stoppage time that would have sealed the win.

Match Report

Leeds arrived depleted, already missing Pascal Struijk and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and quickly fell behind when Palmer slipped the ball through for Joao Pedro to score the opener in the 24th minute.

Chelsea were firmly in control during the first half, with Palmer and Joao Pedro both going close to extending the lead. The duo did combine again after the break to put Liam Rosenior’s team further in front.

A needless shove by Jaka Bijol on the Brazilian forward gave Palmer the chance to score from the spot in the 58th minute, but that goal sparked a response from Leeds.

Jayden Bogle burst into the box from the right and was brought down by a poorly timed challenge from Moises Caicedo, allowing Lukas Nmecha to confidently dispatch the resulting penalty into the left corner.

Six minutes later, Bogle caused problems again as Robert Sanchez failed to gather a loose ball, and substitute Noah Okafor tapped home into an empty net after Nmecha’s touch set him up.

Chelsea were rocked by the equaliser, which stood after a VAR review for a possible Bogle handball. Pedro Neto then sent a dangerous cross just past the bottom corner, while Joao Pedro headed over soon after.

Palmer had the chance to restore Chelsea’s lead in the fourth minute of added time but somehow scooped the ball over an open goal when Caicedo’s low cross found him free inside the six-yard box.

Data Debrief: Palmer pays price

Palmer’s late miss was worth 0.87 of Chelsea’s total 3.65 expected goals (xG), a figure that should have secured victory given Leeds managed just 1.35.

Rosenior may still take heart from Palmer’s record, with the midfielder now scoring 18 Premier League penalties since joining Chelsea in September 2023, more than any other player in that period.

While the missed chance will dominate the headlines, Joao Pedro’s form continues to impress, with six goals in his last eight appearances across all competitions.

The Brazilian has now netted 10 Premier League goals this season, equalling his best return from a single campaign, previously achieved in 2024-25 with Brighton.

He is also only the fourth Brazilian to reach double figures in consecutive Premier League seasons, following Roberto Firmino (four from 2015-16 to 2018-19), Richarlison (2018-19 and 2019-20), and Matheus Cunha (2023-24 to 2024-25), though that milestone may offer little comfort for Chelsea on this occasion.
