Man held after tragedy chant at Manchester derby

During a Manchester derby, a man was apprehended following reports of a gesture mocking the Munich air disaster.

Fans from both Manchester City and United brought attention to the incident at the Etihad Stadium, leading to the arrest.

“During the Manchester derby [on Sunday] officers arrested a man on suspicion of tragedy chanting,” Greater Manchester Police said.

“Following reports made in the crowd, the man was promptly arrested,” Greater Manchester Police added.

The air disaster in 1958 claimed the lives of twenty-three individuals, including eight players from United, occurring as their plane attempted to take off in snowy conditions in Munich.

City emerged victorious in the Premier League match, securing a 3-1 win with two goals scored by Phil Foden and one by Erling Haaland, following Marcus Rashford’s opening goal for United.
