Real Madrid captain Carvajal suffers toe fracture

Dani Carvajal could have already played his last match for Real Madrid after breaking a toe, with his contract now in its final two months.

The defender, who has featured 448 times for Los Blancos since progressing through their academy, is set to become a free agent when the season ends.

As there has been no confirmation of a contract extension, uncertainty surrounds his future at the Santiago Bernabeu, especially given his recent struggles with injuries.

Now 34, Carvajal has managed just 20 appearances across all competitions in the 2025–26 season, following only 11 outings the previous campaign, and he has suffered yet another setback.

He sustained the toe injury during training on Friday ahead of Madrid’s away fixture against Espanyol on Sunday, and the club verified the fracture the next day.

Madrid’s statement said: “After the tests carried out on our player Dani Carvajal by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a fracture of the distal phalanx of the fifth toe on his right foot.”

Reports in Spain indicate he is expected to be sidelined for at least two weeks, meaning he will miss next week’s Clasico clash with Barcelona.

He is also likely to be unavailable for the home match against Real Oviedo on May 14, as well as the following weekend’s trip to Sevilla.

Madrid then conclude their season at home against Athletic Club a week later, leaving Carvajal needing to recover within three weeks if he hopes to play again before the end of the 2025–26 campaign.
