Alexx Ekubo, five others celebrities who died at 40

Nollywood has been thrown into mourning following reports of the death of popular actor Alexx Ekubo, with colleagues expressing shock and sadness over the loss.

The news of his passing was confirmed on Tuesday by talent manager and filmmaker Sam Olatunji.

Reports said the actor died in a Lagos hospital after battling cancer.

Fellow actors also confirmed the development, leading to an outpouring of tributes across social media platforms.

Reacting via her Instagram story, actress Funke Akindele wrote, “Hmmmmmm. Rest in peace, Alexx. I tried to reach out to see you one more time but guess you knew best. May your kind soul, rest in peace, Alexx. ‘Ore mi like you fondly called, me, I will always remember and cherish the good times we shared together. Rest in Peace, Alexx.”

Ekubo is not the only celebrity to have died at the age of 40.

  1. Adejumoke Aderounmu
    Adejumoke Aderounmu, popularly known as Aderonke, was a Nollywood actress recognised for her role as “Esther” in Funke Akindele’s TV series Jenifa’s Diary. Born on March 26, 1984, she died on April 6, 2024, at the age of 40 in a private hospital. Her cause of death was not disclosed at the time. Her brother announced the news on Instagram, while her funeral took place at Owu Baptist Church in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
  2. John Lennon
    John Lennon was a renowned musician and co-founder of The Beatles, known for hit songs such as “Imagine.” He was assassinated in New York City in 1980 by a fan.
  3. Edgar Allan Poe
    Edgar Allan Poe was an American writer celebrated for works such as “The Raven” and for pioneering detective fiction. He died mysteriously in 1849, with possible causes linked to alcohol poisoning or rabies.
  4. Paul Walker
    Paul Walker became famous for his role as Brian O’Conner in the Fast & Furious movie franchise. He died in a car crash in 2013 at the age of 40 while travelling with a friend.
  5. Glenn Miller
    Glenn Miller was a celebrated big band leader and trombonist whose songs, including “In the Mood,” shaped the swing era of the 1940s. He disappeared in 1944 when his aircraft vanished over the English Channel during World War II.
